Kabuki Workshop / Sword-fighting Experience. Vol.1: Dontappo
Ever admired the heroes and heroines in action movies, or the knights in fairy tales? Ever played make-believe and pretended to sword-fight? Come join our Sword-fighting workshop!
This workshop will introduce you to the charms and fascination of tachimawari fight scenes in kabuki. Each of you will then hold a real prop sword and act it out on stage! As our special instructor, we will invite Ichikawa Enshirō, a real kabuki actor who appears on stage during the Kabukiza’s April performances. He is experienced both in acting and in choreographing fighting scenes for various popular kabuki plays.
The art of tachimawari involves heroic and thrilling action, presented through a series of aesthetic, stylized movements. The flowing movements are synchronized with the backstage music and the sound of striking clappers against a wooden board. The music, sound and actors’ movements together complete the beautiful fighting scenes of kabuki.
Of the many types of tachimawari, this time we will introduce one-on-one sword-fighting choreographed to Dontappo, a type of offstage music typically heard in fight scenes.
We have a very limited number of tickets --- Do not miss this extraordinary opportunity!
